Helping young people prepare for life after graduation means giving them opportunities to build real-world skills and explore the possibilities ahead. Recently, our Opportunity Pathways Programs welcomed 38 students from Westinghouse Academy and Allderdice High School for Reality Day, an engaging financial education experience presented by Huntington Bank.
Using the FDIC’s Youth Money Smart program, the event encouraged students to think critically about their futures, from the education and career paths they may pursue to the financial decisions they will face as young adults. Students began the day with an interactive presentation that explored a variety of educational and career opportunities, helping them connect their interests and goals with possible next steps after high school.
Students then participated in a hands-on budgeting simulation designed to bring personal finance concepts to life. Each student was assigned a life scenario complete with a job, income, family status, and credit score, then challenged to create a budget that accounted for everyday expenses such as housing, transportation, food, and other necessities. With guidance from 18 Huntington Bank staff members, students navigated real-world financial scenarios and gained a better understanding of the choices and tradeoffs that come with managing money independently.
To support continued learning beyond the event, each student received a new calculator and financial planning notebook to help them apply the skills and strategies they learned throughout the day.
Reality Day provided a meaningful opportunity for students to build financial literacy, strengthen decision-making skills, and gain confidence as they prepare for the future. We are grateful to our partners at Huntington Bank for sharing their time and expertise and helping make this valuable experience possible for our students. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the day!
