YWCA Greater Pittsburgh’s 2024 Creativity & Innovation Award goes to Dr. Zuly Inirio, a soprano, scholar, and social advocate. Zuly Inirio is a powerhouse Afro-Latina soprano, scholar, TEDx speaker, and social advocate whose multifaceted career bridges the realms of music, academia, and activism. Hailing from the Dominican Republic, she has graced stages across the United States and Europe, captivating audiences with her luminous voice and unwavering commitment to cultural representation and equity. As a soloist, Zuly has delivered breathtaking performances in iconic roles such as the soprano soloist in Verdi's Requiem in Munich, Germany, conducted by Massimiliano Murrali, and the titular role in Verdi’s Aida in Sicily, Italy. Her artistic journey is driven by a profound mission to amplify Afro-Latinidad in classical music. Through her groundbreaking 'Afro-Latinx Song and Opera Project,' she champions the commissioning of new works that explore and celebrate the rich heritage of Afro-Latin and Afro-Latinx communities, while also advocating for the decolonization of the classical music canon.
