Thanks to a generous grant from the Norfolk Southern Foundation, High School PATHmakers recently embarked on an overnight trip to Harrisburg that combined college and career exploration with hands-on civic learning.
The trip gave students the opportunity to visit two institutions offering distinct approaches to post-secondary education. At Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, students learned about the school's unique blend of associate degree programs and skilled-trades training, exploring educational pathways that prepare graduates for in-demand careers. They also toured Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, where they were introduced to innovative technologies and cutting-edge fields of study, including a firsthand look at 3D metal printing in action.
Students also deepened their understanding of government during a tour of the Pennsylvania State Capitol. As they explored the historic building, PATHmakers learned about the three branches of government, the electoral process, and how public policy decisions impact communities across the Commonwealth. The experience provided valuable insight into civic engagement and the importance of participating in the democratic process.
The trip concluded with a special surprise visit to Hershey's Chocolate World. There, students discovered how chocolate is made and had the chance to create their own custom Reese's cups to take home. The fun and interactive experience provided a memorable ending to a journey filled with learning, discovery, and new possibilities.
Exposing students to educational opportunities, career pathways, and civic education helps young people envision their futures and make informed decisions about the road ahead. We are grateful to the Norfolk Southern Foundation for making this enriching opportunity possible and helping our students expand their perspectives beyond the classroom.
