Honoring John Lewis, Protecting Democracy
As a member of the Voting is Power Pittsburgh Regional Coalition, we co-hosted the Sixth Annual Good Trouble Lives On Weekend of Action along with community partners. The event, which was held to commemorate the life of the late civil rights activist and Congressman John Lewis, included workshops, a candlelight vigil, a peace march, and other forms of community education. At YWCA GP, our systems change efforts include protecting voter rights across the Greater Pittsburgh region, and the Weekend of Action is just one way we are helping community members participate in democracy ahead of the November 3 election. STEM and Social-Emotional Learning at Summer Camp
Campers enjoyed a visit to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, where they explored educational exhibits and deepened their understanding of the natural world. They also put their problem-solving skills to work by using a Sphero indi kit to learn the basics of coding. This hands-on activity had campers directing a toy car robot by carefully choosing colored cards that each represented a coded instruction.
Campers also participated in a meaningful community-building project, designing puzzle pieces that represented the principles of empathy and acceptance. Through this activity, they discussed ways to create inclusive community spaces and developed strategies for ensuring everyone feels welcomed, valued, and connected.
