YWCA Greater Pittsburgh is bringing in-person salary negotiation trainings back to the region! In partnership with the American Association of University Women (AAUW), we’re hosting Work Smart trainings to empower individuals and build opportunities for economic advancement.
With questions, please contact our Social Justice & Advocacy Coordinator, Kate Ellison, at kellison@ywcapgh.org.
Work Smart Workshops
This workshop is beneficial for all skill levels and backgrounds; employers and employees alike are encouraged to attend. In particular, we are aware that pay gaps exist across various demographics, including generations, genders, races, and more. We highlight the value this training can bring to those just entering the workforce, those looking to negotiate in an established career, LGBTQ+ workers, women, BIPOC workers, mothers, caregivers, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
Learn how to research your target salary, highlight accomplishments, and find the right words—and the confidence—to negotiate for better benefits and pay. Whether you have an upcoming performance review or are interviewing for a brand-new role, the skills you’ll learn are widely applicable and beneficial.
Negotiating can increase your potential to earn more and can make a difference in paying off loans, supporting your family, buying what you want or need, and saving for the future.
According to Fidelity Investments, 58% of young professionals, for example, do not negotiate their job offers; however, 87% of those who do negotiate receive additional compensation. Those who negotiate increase their starting salaries by an average of $5,000.
Everyone should be able to articulate their value and negotiate a solid financial future for themselves and their families. YWCA Greater Pittsburgh recognizes how pay equity is a multifaceted issue, and that’s why, in addition to our systemic employer-centered approach with the Level Up Pay Equity Campaign, we offer employee-centered Work Smart courses as well.
Why negotiate?
-
This workshop is beneficial for all skill levels and backgrounds. We particularly encourage those who often lack access to negotiation resources and/or institutional knowledge to attend. Older and younger workers, LGBTQ+ workers, women, BIPOC workers, mothers, caregivers, veterans, and individuals with disabilities might find extra value in attending, but all are welcome.

Our next workshop will be Thursday, September 11 at 10:00 a.m. at CoLab18 in Nova Place (100 S Commons, Pittsburgh, PA 15212).
-
If parking in the garage, entering Gate 3 & 4 on South Commons is highly recommended for all visitor parking. Once you enter the garage, you’ll be on Level 2. Follow sidewalk signs that point towards the elevator. Inside the elevator, select (P) Plaza for Access to Colab18. CoLab18 is on your left once you exit the elevators. Nova Place parking rates impact all guests. CoLab18 does not validate parking.
If parking on the street, enter Nova Place's main concourse using any of the double glass entrances. CoLab18 is diagonally across from the security desk on the main level.
If you use public transit, Port Authority bus service to and from Nova Place is abundant. The property has the second-highest stoppage rate (1,100 stops per day) in the city, with one bus every 15 minutes. You can utilize Port Authority transit via the 13, 15, 16, 18, 54, or the T.
-
-
With your workshop ticket, light snacks and refreshments are included, but not a full meal.
-
Women who work full-time take home about 83 cents for every dollar a full-time man is paid. Unless things change, the pay gap will not close until 2106—which is why we’re empowering women with salary negotiation skills and working to change polices and employer culture via the Level Up Pay Equity Campaign.
