YWCA GP in Action - March 2026

Dive deeper into highlights across the organization over the last month. From PATHmakers campus tours to the Pittsburgh Racial Justice Summit, we’ve been busy— take a look at all we’ve been up to!

Making History Fun

February’s Family Fun Night celebrated Black History Month with food and educational activities. Students and families completed crafts that included making music shakers in honor of Ella Louise Jenkins, the “First Lady of children’s music,” and decorating paper hearts in honor of Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the first Black person to successfully perform pericardium surgery. Volunteers from BNY generously gave their time to help ensure the event was a success.

Lessons on Black Entrepreneurs

For Black History Month, students in our Propel Braddock Hills Early Learning classroom engaged in hands-on educational activities, including crafts that helped students learn about Philip B. Downing, inventor of the modern mailbox, and Garrett Morgan, inventor of the three-way traffic signal. We’re proud to offer culturally relevant Early Learning education that helps students of all backgrounds learn about history and envision a future full of possibilities.

Career Pathways Visits

Last month, High School (HS) PATHmakers visited Point Park University and Duquesne University. At Point Park, students were introduced to a variety of potential majors and met with faculty during an open house. At Duquesne, they toured campus with a specific focus on exploring nursing. After learning to use stethoscopes and assistive technology, HS PATHmakers had the opportunity to attend a Q&A where they connected with staff and students.

Eggs-ellent Engineering

Middle School PATHmakers were recently challenged as part of their engineering design curriculum to construct a vehicle out of household materials that would keep an egg from cracking when sent down a ramp. This activity taught students about innovation, physics, and problem-solving—every student who constructed a car was able to keep their egg crack-free!

Racial Justice Summit

YWCA GP was pleased to co-sponsor the sold-out 28th Annual Pittsburgh Racial Justice Summit on Saturday, February 21. The event featured a variety of speakers and workshops, Justice Jam open mic, intergenerational panel discussion, and tabling about programs and upcoming events. We loved building community and learning about ways to advance racial justice!
